Farmhouse Home Design Plans (Classic & Contemporary)

New construction farmhouses are typically one-and-a-half to two stories tall, often featuring white siding, metal roof accents, windows grilles, prominent porches and contrasting roof gables with vertical or shake siding.

Classic farmhouse designs tend to include more traditional elements, such as double-hung windows, cupolas and gable vents. Interiors are both rustic and simplistic, with striking wood tones, prominent architectural beams and fireplaces.

Contemporary farmhouse designs, on the other hand, are more streamlined, losing many of the traditional details in favor of modern architectural elements — such as larger, taller, more creative window configurations. The interior is still simplistic, but far less rustic with more of a Scandinavian-like influence.

English Country Home Design Plans

The English Country style features an abundance of timeless character, with steeply pitched gable roofs, ornamental corbels, tight groupings of windows, decorative half-timbering, and a mix of wood and natural stone elements.

To give this look a modern flair — and to steer away from the classic Tudor look — many of our customers choose to take inspiration from just a few English Country elements, such as the roofline or half-timbering.

Classic Americana Home Design Plans

Love the charm of English Country architecture, but want something that feels more at home in the United States? Classic Americana home design may be for you. Often painted white, this style boasts old world charm with its simplistic, boxy exterior, straightforward roofline, broad, flat surfaces and relatively few contrasting details.

Classic Americana homes have a synergy to them, combining a series of unembellished elements to create a wonderfully distinguished look.

Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Home Design Plans

Perhaps America’s most iconic architectural style, Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired homes are designed with distinct, low-slung horizontal lines, overhung roofs and porches, an abundance of windows, and low-pitched rooflines.

This style feels both classic and contemporary, with a striking look that’s sure to capture the imagination of guests and onlookers alike.

Prairie Style Home Design Plans

Prairie Style homes were the inspiration behind Frank Lloyde Wright’s famous design approach, so it’s no surprise that these two styles have similarities — mainly, the emphasis on horizontal lines. Prairie Style homes tend to stretch outward, not upward, as they’re traditionally built on huge parcels of land. They feature low rooflines and place an emphasis on boxy, horizontal elements. Aesthetically, they’re more conventional-looking and less edgy than Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs.

Modern Prairie Style homes are becoming more popular, making for a sophisticated, contemporary spin on this classic design style. Both traditional and modern Prairie Style homes are a delightful departure from everyday architecture.

Executive Home Design Plans

For those who want to enjoy the luxury of one-level living, it doesn’t get any better than Executive Style ramblers. These extravagant homes feature a stately exterior, often with circular or curved design elements to make a truly lasting impression. The main level contains everything you need to live well, including a great room, kitchen, dining room, large owner’s suite, laundry room, an office and more.

Built-out lower levels feature additional space for games and recreation — often including a wet bar — and a number of extra bedrooms for guests or children. With incredibly thoughtful design plans, these Executive Homes make Norton one of the very best custom rambler home builders in Minnesota.
